My name is Courtney Jade Butlion, a 22-year-old individual with a compelling journey that has shaped my character and aspirations. I would like to share my story with you in the hope that it may inspire and shed light on the possibilities that arise from perseverance and determination. From a very early age, I faced the challenge of nearly being born fully deaf. At two months old, my journey with hearing difficulties began with my first ear surgery, during which I was diagnosed with 'glue ears.' This marked the commencement of my encounters with the medical profession, as I underwent two pairs of grommet procedures aimed at facilitating the drainage of fluid from my ears. Throughout my formative years, I often found myself facing admonishment for what others perceived as a lack of attentiveness. It wasn't until a comprehensive check-up at the doctor's office that the reality of my hearing impairment became apparent. Undeterred by these challenges, I am currently a dedicated soccer player at Towson, participating in the NCAA's Division I program. My ultimate goal is to pursue a professional career in soccer, utilising my experiences not as a disability but as a powerful tool to demonstrate to others that they too can overcome obstacles and achieve their aspirations.
